The age-old debate between modernism and post-modernism.
It’s like watching a pair of cats squabble over a dead mouse. Let’s start by acknowledging the tremendous impact that modernism had on the cultural landscape of the 20th century. It was a bold and ambitious movement that sought to break free from the constraints of the past and celebrate the individual, the new, and the innovative. However, it’s worth noting that modernism often fell victim to its own self-importance. Its creators, whether in literature, art, or architecture, often seemed more interested in impressing their peers than engaging with a wider audience. They created a private club, with entry reserved for the elite few who could decipher their complex codes. This is where post-modernism comes in. Post-modernism rejected the idea of the “masterpiece” and challenged the notion of a universal standard of taste. It embraced the messy, the contradictory, and the imperfect, celebrating the diversity of human experience, whether high or low. Post-modernism created space for previously marginalized voices and rejected a heaped majority of grand narratives that had dominated culture for centuries. Of course, post-modernism was not perfect. Its rejection of grand narratives could be seen as a kind of nihilism, a refusal to engage with the world on any meaningful level. And some of its creators seemed more interested in irony and pastiche than in creating something genuinely new. But at its best, post-modernism was a liberating force that challenged the dominant cultural norms and inspired generations of creators.
So, which is better: Modernism or Post-Modernism?
As a lover of post-modernism, I’m inclined to say that post-modernism has had a more significant impact on culture in recent decades. It has created space for previously marginalized voices and challenged the elitism that had dominated modernism. It has inspired a new generation of creators who value diversity, contradiction, and imperfection. And really, what could be more exciting than that?
